Each year Miami’s Winter Music Conference (WMC) attracts music and nightlife industry experts, panelists, DJs, musicians, artists and, of course hordes of up-for-it party people to South Beach where, for an extended 3-day weekend, all can mix and intermingle under the pretense of actually working. And even though the WMCs popularity may have dropped over the past few years (due to similar events), there is no denying it’s importance in the international nightlife and music scene as a bellwether indication of new styles and trends in dance music as recording artists, DJs and producers often schedule their biggest releases of the year to coincide with the WMC each year.
Clubs and private parties all over South Beach are instantly transformed to testing labs where the DJs can experiment with new sound concoctions, the outcome and result largely determines the popularity of a certain style or sound for at least the following few months leading up to, and sometimes if the sound is big enough, right through the summer party season. To have rocked the house at the WMC main stage or any of the afterparties generally adds to a DJs credibility (marketability/bookings) and in many cases notoriety -- This is, after all clubland, where terms like “corporate performance” take on an altogether different meaning.
In the early years, smatterings of reports from poolside parties at the WMCs main venue the grande dame Fontainbleu Hotel read more like tabloid gossip columns covering the exploits and misadventures of a new generation of rockstar: the club and party DJ. Regardless of being fact or fictional, the mere idea of living out or being part of some of these wild antics all added to the appeal of attending the WMC itself.
Summer Music Conference - Shanghai, 8.24, 25, 26
Organizers of this weekend’s first ever Summer Music Conference (SMC) at Dino Beach Waterpark are keen to re-create the buzz and industry aspects of the conference in Miami by providing a platform to showcase varying styles of musical talent from in and around Shanghai and beyond. A commercial area is also planned where local artists, musicians and performers can meet one another as well as music industry representatives, and to provide an audience-level channel or touchpoint to offer goods and information on their upcoming activities and events.
At the end of the day, however, it’s a party and liquor sponsors are on hand to ensure that a party atmosphere, integral to the success of any nightlife event, is at least within reach.
The Dino Beach Waterpark facilities, slides, wavepool all remain in operation during the 3 day event and the venue itself holds upwards of 15,000 people. Performances are held on 2 separate stages and have been scheduled to provide music variety, meaning there will be complementary (vs conflicting) performances on each stage -- If hip hop DJs are playing on the main stage, then a live band or other type of DJ, perhaps a trance or an electro DJ will be playing on the side stage to provide an alternative area to party.
A vibrant mix of electronic DJs, hip hop DJs, MCs, live bands and dance crews have already signed up to take part in the inaugural SMC and the roster provides diversity over the 3 day event. Look for live indie rock, punk, post punk, and new metal bands as well as hip hop turntablists, drum n bass dubplate selektas, trance and psytrance Goa full moon worshippers, mashed up mayhem, funkdoobiest dub and reggae, dirty electro and more. It’s all in there, it’s all good! The lineup for the first SMC is mostly Shanghai acts with some Beijing representation as well.
The final SMC roster is to be confirmed, but expect over 60 differents acts including the likes of: Magic Garden; Syndicate Beijing; Uptown Pressure; Bananas; Uprooted Sunshine; Antidote; Klash Dance; Union Music; Phreaktion; SKO; Daydream; Maya; Ravingradio; 021; Tagteam; Caster; DragonMaster; Icing Culture and Rony62.
