Some time around May it became clear to me that this summer was going to be incredible... The schedule was getting laid out for a whole bunch of different events and activities that comprised and combined different styles of music, entertainment, pop, rock, funk, hip hop... you name it, it was all in there.
Well, here we are in the middle of what's got to be the hottest summer in some years, and those events that looked good on paper back in May are all taking shape now, and this week is probably one of my own personal ya-must-see-must-do kind of weeks... It's like B-Boy Week in Shanghai...

B-Boys they're an essential element of hip hop... Breakdancers, grafitti artists, basically any of the fellas that filled out your crew along with DJs and MCs. You didn't have to be the guy, you could simply add to the vibe by feeling it and being there.
The landscape here in China, 2007 isn't really anything like New York back in the day when hip hop was taking shape, and there are all sorts of other elements that make Chinese hip hop unique. The core elements are all still there though, respect, cameraderie -- the feeling you get from being part of a crew, yep, it's all there. This week theres 16 crews headed to Shanghai and they converge on bonbon and Dino Beach for what may be China's first national Breakdance Battle. There's a preview at bonbon on Thursday night, the actual full day of battle dance at Dino Beach on Friday, and a wrap-up after party again at bonbon on Saturday.
Here's some video examples.... some back-in-the-day stuff, as well as some current and new directions. Hope it adds a bit of context to the whole week of events.
Well, ok, this is actually Neneh Cherry, and its Pop - Buffalo Stance.... But she was tough and pulled off b-boy even better than the b-boys themselves Hahaha!
Ok, here we go with the break dance... this some oldskool styles, a battle, or what we call PK here....
Seems to have taken more hardcore athletecism and gymnastics, but still breakdance. Still awesome...
Battle scene from the movie.... Lil Fizz is here in Shanghai too .. check it..
OK< This is some kinda new style... its not even break dance, its a crew for the 21st century... These guys are choir as in choral group singing... 2 examples: UC Berkeley DeCadence doing an interpretation of an oldskool video game... and , and other crew "Artists in Resonance" with britneys "Toxic" dig.
