3.07 The Young Punx
Written by plui

As the music industry continues to evolve, more and more artists are blurring the once-divided lines of DJ and musician. This Friday March 7, 2008 Shanghai Club Bonbon, Home of Godskitchen China proudly presents The Young Punx, one of UKs hottest acts who have earned high praise as by the likes of Judge Jules of BBC Radio 1, and Fatboy Slim.

The most insane/catchy tune of the year... Fatboy Slim

The Young Punx are pioneers of a new sound called Mashpop and Punkstep, and add to the list of groundbreaking, mixed up and mashed up artists/DJs that have stunned crowds at Club Bonbon over the past two years including Simian Mobile Disco, 2ManyDjs, Basement Jaxx' Felix B, Arthur Baker, Felix da Housecat, and The Scratch Perverts.

Their podcasts are among the most downloaded music shows on Apple's iTunes Music Store

The Young Punx are in fact the London-based duo Hal Ritson and Cameron Saunders. Over the past few years they have firmly established themselves as the new darlings of UK dance music, with many of the world’s top DJs championing their records and over 100 BBC Radio 1 plays to date. The duo are at the forefront of the UK dance scene, and their cheeky pop culture mentality has seen them catch the headlines in mainstream media as diverse as The Sun, The Mirror, La Stampa, Radio 4 news and even BBC 2 Newsnight.

They just recently released a full-length debut album "Your music is killing me". Their fresh and energetic sound that they term "Mashpop and Punkstep" is the natural next step in the evolution of mashup music - fusing elements of house, electro, breaks and drum and bass with an eclectic soundclash of popular culture references, rock, disco, 80s pop, classical and jazz to create something instantly original and resolutely accessible.

The Young Punx - Young and Beautiful

Tom Novy

Performed entirely by the band and their guests without any audio samples, and with a wry sense of cheeky humour and pop art sensibility, the album features tracks such as "Rockall", ‘Young And Beautiful’ and a surfer breaks track ‘You’ve got to...’ which is featured on the FIFA '07 EA computer game.

Today, The Young Punx are among the most highly demanded remixers in the UK. They have remixed artists such as Chicane and Tom Jones, Scissor Sisters, Hound dogs, Dario G, Tina Turner, Space Cowboy and many more. The Young Punx created the lead radio mix for Studio B’s “C’mon Get it On” which spent several weeks on the Radio 1 Playlist. Their radical Motown-meets-house overhaul of the classic Delacey "Hideaway" has gained a reputation as one of the most daring and enjoyable remixes of recent years, and most recently their mix of Norman Cook's "Mighty Dub Katz - Magic Carpet Ride" hit number 1 in the UK club charts.

Like 2ManyDJs/Soulwax, The Young Punx perform both as DJs and as The Young Punx live band. The full live band includes guitar virtuoso Guthrie Govan (Guitarist Magazine guitarist of the year) and vocals from Tiffany Gore (Medcab / Kraak en Smaak) and Yolanda Quartey (Bugz in the attic / Deekline / Cuban Brothers). In 2006 they performed for 2 nights at the Nano Mugen Festival in Japan to an audience of 24,000. Highlights of 2007 include performing at the Glastonbury Festival, the XFM Remix at Cargo, and SummerSonic Festival in Tokyo and Osaka.

More recently The Young Punx have recorded guest mixes for Annie Nightingale, XFM, Kiss FM, Andi Durrant’s Galaxy FM Network and Ministry of Sound radio, and several mixes for Judge Jules. They are residents at Positiva Calling at The Cross in London and have DJed at Radiohead’s aftershow parties in Earl’s Court

As well as co-running dance label MofoHifi, and performing in dance acts Medcab and Mohito, multi-instrumentalist Hal from The Young Punx also produces and/or performs behind the scenes on many other top 20 dance projects such as Eric Prydz's number one hit "Call on me”, "Shine" by the Lovefreekz, “Ai no corrida” by Uniting Nations and “Fire” by Lethal Bizzle. Hal is the vocalist on the top 20 hit “Tell me why” by Supermode on Data Records and co-wrote 3 tracks on the new album by David Guetta.

The Young Punx are the evolution of electronic dance music, mixing live performance elements into the DJ performance and taking the mashup to newer, higher levels. They perform a live DJ set at Shanghai Club Bonbon on Friday, March 7, 2008.
